10 Things That Are NOT Overrated About Visiting Europe

Posted on September 6, 2018September 6, 2018 by admin

Ten Things That Are Not Overrated About Europe

Greetings from the Coliseum in Rome, Italy! Today I’m sharing with you ten things that are not overrated about visiting Europe. We have two videos on things that are overrated in Europe, but there are some things that are spot on when it comes to visiting Europe.

#1 Long Lines At Major European Landmarks

The long lines you’ve heard about at the best European landmarks are not overrated! We’re here in January, and there’s a very long line to get into the coliseum. The lines at the Vatican Museum are equally long. In winter! If you come in summer, the lines are really crazy long, up to two kilometers long in some places. If there’s a museum in Europe that you really want to visit, check to see if they have online reservations that will allow you to bypass the long lines. For attractions like the Louvre or Vatican Museum, you can book tours online. I can’t recommend this enough, especially in summer. In the offseason, you might get into the Louvre in five minutes, while high season can be as long as two hours to get in to any of the most popular European landmarks.

#2 Some of the Countries With the Best Food Are in Europe

French and Italian food are not overrated. Both cuisines are amazing. In France, you’ll love the bread and the cheese, but there is much more. You’ll have duck, frog legs and escargot. In Italy, it’s not just pasta and pizza. They have amazing meets and cheeses, and fantastic wines. Even if you go to places that aren’t known for their cuisine, like Sweden or Finland or England, you’ll still find dishes that are really good. When you are traveling, make sure you eat local. Don’t just go to McDonald’s or the local kebab place, but make sure you’re eating where the locals do. Europe really does have some of the countries with the best food, including France, Italy and Greece.

#3 European Low-Cost Airlines

The low cost European airlines really do have great deals! EasyJet and RyanAir have ridiculously cheap fares around Europe. I can fly from Rome to Berlin for 35 Euros. These fares are more easily found if you book a few months in advance. If you wait until the last minute, it will be more expensive. So, the idea that you have to take EuroRail or InterRail isn’t the case any more as it can be just as cheap to fly now. You can find the cheapest flight to the U.S. and then catch low-cost carriers to go elsewhere in Europe. Sometimes, this can actually be cheaper than some of the train tickets. The best thing about these low-cost carriers is they have made it affordable to see all of Europe.

#4 The Top European Landmarks are Well Worth Visiting

There’s a reason the lines are so long at places like the Coliseum and the Vatican. It’s because they really are fantastic, and you will not regret visiting the Louvre in Paris, the Prado in Madrid or the Pergamon in Berlin. When your guidebooks mention the top European landmarks, they are well worth going to. Some of the secondary sights, like Madame Tussaud’s, may not be worth the hype, or may be overpriced.

#5 European Beer

Let’s be honest. If you’re having over some friends you want to impress; do you buy an American beer or a German beer? Germany, Czech Republic and Belgium have tons of local brewers and a history of brewing. Germany even had a beer purification law for hundreds of years because their beer is so good. If you find yourself in any of these countries, make sure you try the local beer: it’s not overrated! When you come back home, the beer just won’t taste the same as European beer fresh from the brewer.

#6 The Expensive Countries Really Are Expensive

England, Switzerland and Scandinavia are much more expensive than other European countries. For what you would spend on one week in Switzerland, you could spend two weeks in Portugal or Spain. So, if you are planning to visit any of these expensive countries, plan to spend significantly more on food, lodging and transportation than you would if you went to Italy, Spain or Portugal.

#7 Fashion Trend Setting in Cities Like Paris & Milan

When you visit Milan and Paris, you will notice that everyone around you (minus the tourists) is impeccably dressed in the latest fashion. Milan and Paris are on the cutting edge of fashion, so you’re likely to see new styles that won’t pop up elsewhere for six months or a year. There is a very different sense of style in Europe than in the U.S. If you want to blend in a little bit, you might want to do some research on fashion in Europe. Your white tennis shoes, white socks and baseball caps will mark you as a tourist, and possibly a pickpocket target, right away.

#8 Pickpockets & Beggars in Europe

There are a lot of pickpockets and beggars in Europe. Yes, we have them in the U.S. as well, but you’ll see many more in Europe, especially at the major sights. At the Coliseum, or in Barcelona, you really have to pay attention for pickpockets. Keep your valuables safe when visiting these popular sights around Europe. There are also many beggars, and some of them are children, which can be shocking the first time you see it. Do not give money to the beggars, as it’s usually part of a racket that you don’t want to help support.

#9 European Tour Groups Will Run You Over

The European tour groups are everywhere and they will run you over. If you see a tour group coming, get out of the way as they will not stop! Keep your kids close so they aren’t swept away in the crowd. I’ve been run over in Versailles, and my kids were pushed aside for a photo opp at the Vatican. It’s best to get way ahead of a European tour group, or just step aside and let them pass by.

#10 Summer Eurofunk on Public Transport

In the summer, you might experience the Eurofunk, or a peculiar smell, especially on public transportation. In Europe, people do bathe, but just like on Chicago’s CTA in the summer, be prepared for some funky smells in close quarters. All you can do is make sure you are clean and using deodorant so you’re not adding to the problem. After spending many summers in Europe, I can verify this is a real thing!

5 Things You Have to Eat in Brazil

The 5 Things You Have to Eat in Brazil

Comida Brasileira, Brazilian Food! Brazil is full of delicious meats, fruits, and specialties. Here we go through six overall tasty treats you should have when you come to Brazil. The best of Brazilian food, so you know what to eat when you visit Brazil.

The Lanches: the snacks like Pao de Quiejo (cheese bread), Coixinha do Frango (fried chicken dough ball), and such that go great with a Chop (draft beer) or a Caipirinha (the local Brazilian mixed drink), and if you don’t like alcohol the drink of brazil is Guarana.

The Meats: Brazil is full of great meat and the most famous meats you will have at a Rodizio or Chrassasco. Here they walk around with many different types of meats from chicken hearts to ribs, but the most important is Picanha, a specific kind of Brazilian cut of meat.

The Fruits: Brazil is full of amazing fruit and many you might not have heard of. Visit a market and try fruit you never saw before and have juices made fresh just for you.

The Sweets: those fruits go well into many of the bolos (cakes) that are in Brazil, but if you want some chocolate have Brigadeiro, a chocolate made with sweetened condense milk. There are also traditional favorites like doce de leite (cream caramel) or doce de abobara (sweetness of pumpkin).

The Local Dishes: each region in Brazil has its own specialities so make sure you are trying what is popular where you are. The south is famous for its beef. The northeast is great for seafood. Bahia has acaraje a bean paste taco kind of dish with shrimp inside. Sao Paulo has its own mortadella/bologna sandwich, or chicken cooked in its own blood in Minas Gerais.

Beans and Rice: beans and rice will appear on the menu again and again and even if you didn’t order them expect beans and rice. They are a staple of the Brazilian food culture. Some typical dishes that highlight these are Caldo de Feijao which is a bean soup/stew dish you have as a starter. Feijoada which is the Brazilian bean stew you will have served with rice, kovi, fried banana and with a ice cold chop (beer).

What to Eat in Washington, DC

The nation’s capital is full of amazing restaurants and tons of international food for travelers to enjoy. Here we give you our five favorite foods to enjoy when we visit Washington, DC.

1. Ethiopian Food: DC has an enormous range of great international restaurants, but one that stands out as quite unique is the abundance of Ethiopian restaurants in The District. If you get a chance check one out and make sure you wash your hands before you eat, because you don’t use a fork and knife, you use your hands and your bread to enjoy the stews, meats and veggies on offer.

2. Maryland Crab: whether it is amazing Maryland Crab Cakes or just plain old tasty crab in anything DC has a lot of crab options for you. So if you see some one selling some crab cakes on the street or on the menu you will get a fresh and local tasty treat.

3. Oysters: the oysters from Chesapeake Bay are worth their weight in tastiness. And what is great oysters are a popular happy hour treat at a number of restuarants around town. So enjoy some oysters and a local beer.

4. Half-Smoked Sausage: whether you are wandering around the national mall looking at museums or you head up to Ben’s Chili Bowl there are plenty of options of eating this local sausage.

5. Other Local Treats: Chicken wings with Mumbo sauce is popular when you can find it. The Mumbo sauce is a combination of sweet and sour sauce and BBQ sauce in my opinion. You can always grab a cupcake in Georgetown (they are famous there), or you can head out to Mount Vernon and grab some peanut soup and some bread pudding.

5 Things You Have to Eat in Germany

Posted on January 24, 2018February 18, 2020 by admin

5 Things You Have to Eat in Germany

Germany is full of amazing food choices, from traditional German specialties like Schweinbraten and Knoedel to international fair to the old standby of a Bratwurst. Here we have five things people should eat when they visit Germany, because you do not always have time to eat everything that a country has to offer. So here are our foodie five.

Drink the Beer:

No, beer isn’t food, but in Germany it is just as vital to have beer as food and what is great about the beer in Germany is that each region or city will have its own traditional beer brands as well as a the possibility of its own beer style. So whether you like pilsner, lager or black beer there will be something for you.

Yes, Eat the Sausages:

Thueringer Rostbratwurst is the definitive bratwurst you should have in Germany. But it is not the only sausage, from the small Nuremberger bratwurst to a frankfurter to Weisswurst, Germany is full of sausages that you should try.

Pork, Pork & More Pork:

Germany seems to be the capital of Pork eating and for good reason. There are a number of amazing pork dishes in Germany. Haxe or a grilled pork shoulder or perhaps boiled instead (Eisbein) or as Schweinbraten, or maybe smashed down into a pork schnitzel. You will not run out of way eat Scwein in Germany.

The Bread:

Germany has amazing bakeries in the large cities and small towns and you should take advantage of that. From Brotchen (small rolls) to loaves of dark thick dense bread to the amazing cakes and treats you can’t go wrong with bread in Germany.

The Garnishes or Die Beilagen:

German menus do not give you an option with the side dishes. And they do that for good reason. The meals in Germany already have the recommended side dishes that go with those dishes so you don’t pick and choose. So you may have sweet red cabbage (Rotkohl) or traditional Sauerkraut. There is always potatoes in their many forms as well, Pommes (fries), Kroketten (croquettes), perhaps as a dumpling? And the noodles aren’t too bad either, nor are the soups. Just trust the menu with your side dishes in Germany

Guten Appetit!
